Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Review Formula = Total Recall – Arnold + A Dork’s Romance in Reverse

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is dramatic science fiction story about a man who selectively erases his memory. Jim Carrey, whose serious role in The Truman Show came as an impressive surprise, plays Joel, a likable but introverted guy who's suffering from the feelings following his breakup.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ReviewKate Winslet of the Titanic fame stars as Joel's former flame in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Lacuna Inc. is just the organization Joel needs. Specializing in radical medicine, they market their services to those struggling through Joel's situation. If you've got a moment, check out the Lacuna Inc. website, it's quite clever and well designed. Employed by Lacuna are amicably dorky assistants played by Kirsten Dunst and Elijah Wood.

Everyone can think of a past relationship he or she would rather forget. This one time, this one girl- no, better not name names. What's in the past is in the past. But would you rather forget the entire relationship? If you don't remember it, did it really happen? See the thinly veiled influence of the memory implant storyline of Total Recall, starring the most famous Governor in the history of bad action movies and male pregnancy (Junior). Only in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, it's all about memory removal, not supplemental memories.

It is the opinion of this Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind review that there are few incidents that would qualify as moments I’d rather forget, but as Joel begins to forget about the anguish associated with his failed relationship, he gets closer to his original interest.

Written by critical favorite Charlie Kaufman, whose projects included Adaptation and Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind promises similar mental journeys within the characters.

There are three posters in a themed series for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind that are actually pretty cool. Have a peek: Carrey, Winslet and Dunst

I can't wait to see this movie. You have no idea.

I saw it last night and was pleasantly surprised, albeit a bit winded and confused by the whole idea. It is rare one finds a romance movie (and anyone who calls Eternal Sunshine anything but a romance movie is a damn liar) that is neither tragic nor a fluffy romantic comedy. Instead, both the characters and the audience find themselves laughing uneasily by the last scene. I think the best word to describe the movie fall somewhere in the region of "jarring" or "striking" or something. The movie leaves you with a strange but not entirely unpleasant catharsis - we don't feel that from movies often enough. Beyond the actual plot, watch for a lot of clever devices and visual motifs throughout the film; there are some really cool approaches taken when dealing with the inside of Joel's mind. I saw Sunshine with a good friend of mine I hadn't seen in six month who spent the greater part of high school on heavy medications. He said it was kind of sad and kind of frightening to be able to pick out the most accurate imitations of mental illness and unrest when they show up on celluloid, and this movie was much more on the mark than not. Good to know. But seriously, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of those movies where you walk out wanting to say something, but change the subject the minute you open your mouth, choosing instead to let it stew a bit. I'm pretty sure that's a good thing. Also, this led to one of the better comments said in the movie theater parking lot, at least that I've heard in a while: "Eve, take this as you will, but had I seen this movie with anyone else, I swear I would have been going into seizures." Thanks man, you really do know how to make a girl feel special.

Very creepy at times, this movie really plays with your mind. I kind of like how the story is told backwards and you can put the pieces together yourself. Jim Carrey actually does a good job not letting his stupid humor that he is most known for take over his character. I agree with Jonah's post in that its hard to talk about the movie right after you see it. It makes you think and gives you goose bumps numerous times. Good movie, but very creepy.

This is one of the better movies Ive seen. The movie controls Jim Carrey's stupid humor, and pulls of a clever, moving story line

Mediocre romantic movie hiding behind a Total Recall slant in an attempt to distract the fellas from the fact that this is actually one for the ladies. You have Jim Carrey playing a serious role. Big deal. You won't be amazed by the fact he's not jumping around like a madman. The novelty of his bland character wears off after about 10 minutes. You'll start wishing he'd turn into The Mask if only just to smack Kate Winslet with an oversized cartoon mallet. Why? Her impulsive-hippy character will strike you as a bad impersonation of one of those wind-chime, moon and star, candle-collecting pot-head bitches who doesn't know her ass from her elbow. Trust me, such characters don't need glorifying on a big screen, or any screen for that matter. Especially when the acting doesn't wash.
Only other thing worth mentioning is the disjointed timeline which flits around in disorienting 'Memento-style' (like The Butterfly Effect)
The Butterfly Effect, however, is a superb movie not be confused with this second-rate wannabe!
Guys, if your lady persuades you to go see this one, just remember.. I told ya it sucks! Don't let her talk you into it. It's a trick!

There was recently an aticle in Entertainment Weekly that went over the greatest movies that somehow fell short in the box office, and it was suprising to see that Eternal Sunshine, a movie released not more than a few months ago, made this list. After seeing this movie, I can simply say that it is an absolute crime that it did not find itself at the top of the box office. To strip it down to it's bare genre, it is a romance story, but it's novelty and unique flow seem to weave a genre of it's very own. Carrey's character, Joel, is the introspective, shy, and miserable opposite of any charcter that Carrey has played in the past, yet the talent with which he plays the part leaves us wondering if he has been cast in the wrong roles in previous movies. For those of you who have seen and liked Punch Drunk Love's Adam Sandler in action, you can't help but see similarities with Carrey in this movie.

The movie, centered around the relationship Carrey shares with polar opposite Winslet and decides to erase, breaks your heart while keeping a grin on your face. There is something in this bizarre movie that hits home in such a fashion that you will find your thoughts returning to the movie again and again, and will create a new standard by which you judge the creativeness of movies. I highly recommend you see this movie, and spread news of it if you enjoy it as much as I did.
