Ned Kelly

Ned Kelly Review Formula = Robin Hood + Billy the Kid + Down Under

Ned Kelly is the story of one of the most well known Australian folk heroes. In Australia, Ned Kelly has a reputation similar to Robin Hood - technically an outlaw but none the less a hero of the people.

Ned KellyFortunately for the Australians - where this movie was released before the US, the cast features both Heath Ledger and Naomi Watts, two Aussie hometown favorites. Back in the US, Americans don't think much of the Australian influence on Hollywood, but down under it's a whole other point of view. In addition to the stars of Ned Kelly, they boast Mel Gibson, Russel Crowe, and Nicole Kidman. In fact, these three get more media coverage than the President of Australia.

Ned Kelly takes place in the late 1800s in Victoria, Australia (heard of Melbourne? Yeah, near there). Heath Ledger plays Ned Kelly, who is portrayed as a victim of persecution and a morally just, witty, bank robbing criminal. Take from the rich and give to the poor, Ned. Sound familiar?
