The Alamo
The Alamo Review Formula = Unbalanced History + Texans vs. Mexicans + Glory Aspiration
The Alamo is the story of a couple hundred Texans defending a dilapidated mission against an onslaught of Mexican soldiers in San Antonio, Texas, 1836. What the true motives of each part were depends on which history books you read.
What is certain is that the battle took place only days after the Texas declaration of Independence, the Texans died in the siege, and that Texas went on to become an independent country. Some may argue that the mentality of a certain Texan George W. Bush who will remain unnamed is still disconnected from the rest of the country, but that is unrelated to this Alamo review.
The movie stars Dennis Quaid as General Sam Houston and Billy Bob Thornton as Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier.
Box Office Talk appreciates story lines where the good guys do not always win. And while it is more exciting and dramatic to discover this during the movie instead of 4th grade history class (read: Titanic), we'll take what we can get.
