The Passion of the Christ

The Passion of the Christ Review Formula = Remember, Prayer + Violence = Jihad

The Passion of the Christ is a dramatic depiction of the final twelve hours of the life of Jesus Christ. The Passion opens with the familiar depiction of the last supper and goes on from there.

The Passion of the ChristDirected by Mel Gibson (Braveheart, What Women Want), The Passion of the Christ has stirred up much controversy over its scrutinizing detail and interpretations. In all likelihood, this controversy will lead The Passion of the Christ to a #1 opening, as advance ticket sales have been bought out in some areas weeks in advance by church groups.

Unfortunately, The Passion of the Christ takes an ethical misstep, the likes of which were foreshadowed by televangelist scandals. How can a major film capitalize on the deeply personal beliefs of its viewers and maintain its ethics? Look for The Passion of the Christ to gross more than the $158 million Jim Bakker swindled out of his followers.

Spirituality on the silver screen mimics more propaganda than prayer.

Words cannot express how horrific this movie was. Forget content, I mean whou could pay attention to the 'suffering' when the screen was filled with blood, flesh and bulging eyeballs? Mel Gibson should stick to chick flicks with Helen Hunt where he belongs. Go back to Australia - your movie sucked.

Haha, nice one tipdawg. You can bet I'll be waiting for this one on DVD, or maybe even not at all.

The reason this was so good is because it opened on Ash Wedensday and had a good friday. Tipping you need all the help you can get from the man upstairs

I can't wait til Gibson does The Birth of Christ. Its going to be 2 hours of Mary bleeding in a stable house...and don't think that its a nice clean birth, I expect blood and cords and no "aaaaahhhh....white light entrance".

Just for the record, Mel long passed any televangelist scandal with Passion ticket sales so far. And Gogi, you're right on the money.

I do have to agree with the people that wrote comments. Mad props to whoever thought of this website, and the slogan! "love it, hate it, Post it!",

see you all at the rozz

We live in a Capitalist society. Therefore it is nearly impossible to avoid the dilemma of "exploiting personal views" for profit.
Micheal Moore, Al Franken and Ann Coulter all do this.
But Gibson went about this project with the very real possibilty that we would eat the roughly 30 million he spent.

All of you who have nothing good to say about the movie "The Passion" should think about what you plan to say when you stand before God on Judgement Day??? He sent his only son to this sinful world to take all of that pain and suffering and hang on that old cross for everyone of us. It's hard to believe he did that for even those of you who make fun and laugh at what he went through. The movie may have had a lot of blood and things like that in it, but it's all of that blood that washes all of our sins away. Will you honestly stand before him one day and laugh and make stupid comments to him about what his son did for you & I? I would hope not! Hell is pretty HOT! No, I haven't personally been there, but Jesus said it is and that's all I need to know!!!! Think about it before you critize it.

Posted by: Leigh Anne at March 19, 2004 09:21 AM

Remember what Jesus said on the Cross.... 'Forgive them Father for they know not'. All those who have written negative, sarcastic etc., remarks really dont get the message of this movie. Yes it was totally violent. Forget what YOU saw and THINK this...... CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT JESUS WENT THROUGH TO SAVE US ALL FROM ETERNAL DEATH. Would anyone out there crucify themselves for me...NO! I think not... Jesus died on the cross for me.. He did that all for me . For this I LOVE and HONOR him more. He did it to give us a choice. The choice is simple, you either re-install a Godly attitude and give him the Thanks & Praise OR continue to just think of yourself and forever be deceived by the devil that you only should be concerned and satisfied with the things of this world. WAKE UP!!!! The devil has a stronghold on you. Jesus came to save us. That is the truth i know and believe. It is my Choice to choose God, for it is only thru his son dying on the cross that we may inherit the kingdom of heaven. Not even once when Jesus was being crucified (In the movie "The Passion.."), did he think of himself, feel sorry for himself,. To his mother he said, thru him all things shall be renewed; to those that crucified him he called to his father in heaven to forgive them. I shall honor and pay respect to him for all the days of my Life. Receive this great message, from this overwhelming movie, and with the right attitude. From my heart to yours Thank you Mel Gibson. People of this World I pray you will make the right choice.

I have seen the movie and came across many positive and negative reviews. Each have their own stand. Some are logical in their arguments albeit being negative. Some condemned Mel for being too gory etc. One thing for sure, this movie is an aspiration of Mel. He has his own dreams like we do. He did it his own way (or God) but not for us to judge. Mel will stand before God one day and I'm sure most of us will be there too to see what God has to say. For those harsh critics, let me say this, remove that speck of dust from your own eyes before you do likewise to others. Some called the movie idolatrous and I must say I could not have agreed more. However, I may not run into that problem because I know who is the real ACTOR but I cannot guarantee that others won't. As the bible says, blessed is he who didn't see and yet believed....Probably, we have lived for far too long in a mechanised world. We have lost out of touch on our real feelings toward God. That is why this movie acts to melt some of our hardened hearts in a visual way like Pharaoh before the miracles performed by Joseph. If you ask me, would I bring a non-christian friend to see this movie? My answer would be yes. I do not care how much I would have contributed to Mel's coffer. I care if the movie could trigger thousand and one questions in my friend's mind to ask. That burst of floodgate would water the initial spring of life and someone's salvation. As for Mel, he could use those money earned for his personal purpose or continue to churn out good movies for the glory of God or contribute to the kingdom of God. Whichever way, if it is from God, no man can dispose and if we do so, we are likely to run into trouble with the higher authority up there. If it is not, God will deal with him in His own way. And what is it to us? Take care of your own linen first.

What a lot of Passion fans don't realize is that this a movie based on a book. Some of my favorite movies based on books are the Star Wars trilogy and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I understand that not everyone likes every movie, but let's all be reasonable. If you didn't like Star Wars, I would not warn you of the perils of the dark side. If you did not like Lord of the Rings, I would not say you are a minion of Mordor. I certainly do not believe that Darth Vader or Saruman are in fact bits of reality. It baffles me that some people interpret movies that are clearly works of fiction, like Passion of the Christ, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the King, to be depictions of reality. Should an Ewok, Elf, or Jesus himself ever shake my hand, I will think differently. Until then, I suggest many of you reign in your fantastic imaginations and spend some time reading the newspaper instead.

Posted by: Jonah at March 26, 2004 12:28 AM

What a wake up call! I think everyone, as young and mature as can handle it, should see this movie. As for being "the most violent movie I have ever seen", as been said by many, that may certainly be true. However, as we, who are offended by violence, filth, profanity and so much other trash which seems to be on every t.v. channel, are told " if you don't like it, change the channel". Well, those of you who don't have anything good to say about "The Passion of the Christ" do not have to choose to watch it. As we all were taught to believe, Jesus has suffered tremendously for us to have eternal life. That is easy to understand when told. However, it is much, much harder to actually see. Watching the heartless suffering that our Savior has endured for every single person on this earth, has really made me have a better understanding of his true, unconditional love for us. Without his horrible suffering, none of us would have all of the things in this world that so many of us truly do not appreciate, much less deserve. Therefore, The Passion, for me, was a truly powerfully emotional truth that I will remember forever. It has made me want to become a better person, the best that I can be. The best that Jesus wants me to be in my short time on this earth. Now tell me, how can that be such a negative thing? If all human beings could only be as selfless and forgiving as Jesus is to us, what a wonderful place this world would be.

One more thing- Thank you, Mel Gibson, for having the guts to stand up for Jesus, who is the truth. God will bless you!

Posted by: S.B. at March 27, 2004 12:04 PM

This movie was the most delightful film I've seen about a bloodied bludgened deity in decades! I took my three-year-old niece and six-year-old nephew who remarked, "Dear Uncle! What a marvelous depiction of the terrifying suffering that our Lord endured to save us from eternal damnation and hellfire!" He has quite a savory taste for Our Lord and Savior, indeed. The young lad asked to see the picture a second and third time! God bless him! My young niece - Sally is her name - commented quite sardonically, "My, those Jews sure are nutty!" Indeed, Sally.

My joy of a wife, Joan, took our dogs - Peter, Paul, and Matthew - and cat - Magdelene - to view the masterful Mr. Gibson's film. Peter barked in celebration throughout the entire picture, while Magdelene purred at The Christ's selfless martyrdom. Paul and Matthew growled knowingly at Judas' betrayal and suicide. Someone got milkbones after dinner!

And what can I say about the eighteen-minute torture sequence in which the evil Romans pummeled the Lord Jesus, except, "Bravo!" I have waited and waited for a live-action horror show depicting my dear sweet passive Jesus beaten within an inch of his life in near-nudity in the most realistic of manners! As a young child of about eight, I presented my dear mother (who is now in Hell, by the way - missed communion once in 1974 - shame) with a crayon drawing of a bloodied Christ, complete with large chunks of the Lord's flesh strewn about the background of the portrait. I can't remember whether that drawing remained on the fridge for nine or ten years, but I was halfway through my first seven years of junior college when that old thing finally came down!

Well, I have to run to Church group to pick up the dogs! Take care, my friends!

Mel Gibson did a great job on this film and has helped many people re-think their faith. I am sick and tired of all the whiners out there who have to bad mouth something so authentic. All those people can go hang out in Hollywood with all the other left wing freaks. God bless Mel Gibson.

Posted by: Dave at March 28, 2004 11:28 PM

Squiggy, my pet hamster, loved this film, too. It's not just for dogs, cats, and young children. I resent that it's being marketed as such, and I fully support Dave in his willingness and almost Christ-like selflessness in wanting to share his take and experience with this film with ALL of those he knows, animals and humans alike. God loves all creatures is the word on the street.

I read the paper for information. I pray to God for salvation.... not just for me but for all of us in this world. There is nothing in the papers that we need to know that is more important than realising the truth of this world. The devil has a stronghold on many people around the world. Read the bible and you will find all the answers in how to make this a better place to live in.

This movie stired me in ways I never felt possible. Mel Gibson has hit this one right on. Love it or hate it, it really makes no difference. It's meant to evoke thought, emotion and conversation ... and that's exactly what it did. How Christ must have suffered for all of us. If what was portrayed in the movie is even relatively close to what He went through, how small and insignificant all our "suffering" must seem. Well done, Mr. Gibson.

I recall one of the beatitudes: "blessed are they who suffer persecution for justice sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." I am reminded of the venom that satan gave forth in The Exorcist." Sounds as tho some of the anti-passion people have him sitting behind them. God Bless Mel Gibson

I am reminded of the beatitude: "Blessed are they who suffered persecution for justice sake for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Also some of the anti-passion comments recall the movie "The Exorcist" when satan is spewing his venom. This movie is directed to people who believe that Jesus gave his life for our salvation. Do you recall the remarks make at the beginning of "The Song of Bernadette": For those who believe, no explanation is necessary; for those who don't, no explanation is possible

How can you guys just judge a movie that is so powerful! It was the best movie I ever seen. It's hard to believe what Jesus went through just to wip away our sins. I do have to ammit, the blood stuff was gross. After I saw it, I was shaking all over! During the whole movie, it make me think. I had on thing running through my head. WHY YOU JESUS? WHY NOT ME! All you people who critized this movie, your so wrong. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE THERE??? WOULD YOU HAVE YELLED STOP WHEN THEY WERE BEATING HIM?? I WOULD!!! Taking Jesus from the garden. When Peter (?) hung himself because he had sinned 3 times before the crow crow's. He knew.
I just thought this movie was so powerful, just to know what it was like when Jesus had his last hours.
The thing I noticed was that when he was getting nailed to the cross, I felt like I was with him, getting nailed. Right when he was getting wipped, I look at my shoulder and there was a cut that was bleeding, it was fresh, it wasn't there before. BUt you never now.
You people make the right decision.

Please deliver this message to Mr. Mel Gipson personally

Dear Mel :
God bless you
The true meaning of life is to be a ring in the chain of achieving God's purpose on the earth, I think you are one of those rings!!
PLEASE think seriously of the following:
Think of producing another film showing the power of resurrection , the power of the Pentecost & the power of Gospel …. the film shows that JESUS Is THE Mighty Son of God " He was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God's power " 2CO13:4
The theme of the film Is : Jesus is the only Savior , redeemer & life giver
Please consider this issue seriously , pray for it & counsel God's servants in the details ( you need to do this )

The World needs to see what Jesus the Christ sacrificed for the world

Posted by: at April 10, 2004 08:23 AM

For some reason I don't think that people were so angry at Steven Spielberg for showing a graphic, realistic view of the Holocaust in his Oscar Winning film SCHINDLER'S LIST. Why are we getting so upset at Mel Gibson for showing things the way they happened? Should we soften it up for audiences just because they might be too foolish to understand that telling their children what Christ went through is enough? I agree that it is not for children. But let's not have double standards. If we're going to attack a film for being too violent, than attack every other film with violence. My view is, it happened. Mel Gibson believes this too. He believes that we need to see that Jesus of Nazareth was beaten so severely and that he had the power to come off the cross but he didn't, even in the midst of great pain...why? Because he loved us.
One more thing...the film is not anti-semetic. Logic can tell us this. How can a film made to show the love of Jesus Christ, who was a Jew by the way, be anti-semetic(anti-jew)? This makes no sense. If it were anti-semetic, it would also be anti-christ. I admit I have heard people who "Claim" to believe in Christ say that Jews are responsible, but these people are as weak in constructing an argument based in reality and logic(rather than hot tempered opinion) as those who have attacked Mel's movie and those who watch it.
I'm a film student. I love film. I've watched way too many in my life. This film is not just dogmatic. It's technical aspects were breathtaking. The acting, cinematography, makeup and sound were so beyond belief that it stunned me. I am making a prediction right now that the Academy Awards are going to be as hypocritical and rediculous in their decisions as always and not even give the PASSION a single nomination.

can someone throw some light on the role of Satan in the movie, especially the part during the flogging when he strolled past holding a very horrendous looking overgrown baby in his arms. If this is allegorical or symbollic, which part of the scriptures is this scene adapted from? I've been searching for answers and found none to date

Posted by: ACE at April 14, 2004 06:32 AM

With Satan holding the baby scene... I think it was to signify the fact that he would remain having a stronghold on future generations to come. Jesus came to give us a choice. God's way or Man's way. I choose to live to the will of God and not submit to the first sin commited by Adam & Eve and that was when self will was born (Man's way) which leads to the devil's stronghold. Feel free to discuss this further. Mel Gibson Fan

I couldn't agree more with the comments made by "Warner." From the comments made by "Dave and his groupies," it is safe to say that Satan is still alive, well, and living in the hearts of present-day man. Dave, I've already asked God to forgive you for your rude and lude comments and to turn you into an on-fire Christian for Jesus.

To Mr. Gibson, I'd like to say "Bravo" for letting the Lord use you to once again spread the Gospel. And, once again, God has not left himself without a witness. I was praying for you from the first (early February) for strength and endurance in making this film. And I "was not at all suprised" that you had to use your own money . . . and that you had great difficulty in getting the movie distributed. After all, isn't this the way our Lord always works? Doesn't He bring us to our wit's end . . . and then deliver us? Did you really think that a non-believer would make or distribute this movie? God is God and His word does not return void.

My husband is a Protestant Chaplain for Corcoran State Prison, here in California. We wanted you to know just how much we are indebted to you for being a willing instrument of the Lord. What all the critics have missed is that the Holy Spirit made this movie . . . and the Holy Spirit distributed it. THIS MOVIE WAS NOT ABOUT MAKING MONEY. WHAT A SADNESS THAT SPIRITUALLY DECEIVED PEOPLE CAN ONLY SEE THIS MOVIE BY THE $$$ SIGNS.

We were deeply, deeply moved during the screening of this movie. Our love for Jesus is even greater. . . We have been sealed.

One last point, If you ever see that "little old French lady," please tell her we said thank you.

In His Name

The part with the baby is to show that satin was there watching the whole time. In a way is was like saying to God, "i have my child and he isnt getting beaten like yours". satin was mocking God. The part with the children chasing Judus was showing how satin was making him want to kill himself. It was showing what his mind was like. I loved this film. Those who say it was too bloody, are just not excepting the fact that thats what really happened. We have to except it. So many other Jesus films have totally blocked out that part. Pictures we see with jesus on the cross just have him hanging with no blood at all. This is as real as it gets, and we need to stop being in denile like we have in the past with other movies, and realize that this is for real. Thank you lord for this movie. As far as im consered Mel deserves all the money he made from this film. He did a bold thing, and he deserves all the profits. I dont care if he buys 900 covets, he deserves it. Thank you Lord.

After watching The passion of the CHRIST, i realized my lifetime is not enough to show God that I love HIM.

Posted by: Jane at April 29, 2004 05:52 AM

We saw the movie last night and I have not been able to stop thinking about it. The blood and gore did not really bother me...all I could think about was the suffering that Jesus went through. He endured such immense pain to save us all. Also, as I just became a mother last year, I felt the pain that Mary was going through, seeing her son in such agony. I have never wanted to actually break down and weep in a theatre. All I wanted to do was cry when I saw the flashback of Jesus falling as a little boy and Mary running to him. I know that she wanted to shelter Jesus and tell him everything was going to be all right, and try to take his pain away, but she couldn't. That was the most heart-wrenching scene of the movie.

I don't think I ever thought of the crusifixion as being so barbaric. All of the pictures you see seem almost peaceful and void of suffering. I think this movie has really opened my eyes to what Jesus really did for us...even though alot of people would rather not see those images so they can sleep better at night.

Everyone should see this movie, it will make you appreciate life a little more and maybe follow the teachings of Jesus a little more too. Even if you don't believe, Jesus WAS a man. He really lived. This is history and like it or not, it really happened.

I see everything for from childish pratter, to open insults, to respectfully reverant. People who have already made their minds up to not believe this pretty accurate account of a major historical event, are much more closed minded than the Christians whom they make out to be narrow minded hate mongers. But one thing they can't deny, is the little, small voice they hear inside their heads saying
"this could be true. I should pay attention". Politically correct may aid them in this life but in the one awaiting it is of no avail. It's so very easy to sit here a slam Mel for his dicision, but at least he had the courage to take a subject that he knew would be unpopular, spurned by Hollywood, and stand behind it because of the conviction of the Holy Spirit in his life. His faithfullness has been rewarded many times over. Mr. Gibson, my hat's off to you for your courage, your committment to being theogolically correct, and making yourself a sacrifice to the hounds of Hollywood. THANKS for following that still, small voice. I hope you are move to do more and other people as well. The integrety of you film was above reproach.

I just want to thank Mel Gibson for the movie, I thank Him for coming up with the idea to make such a movie. Every week I check the Box Office Total to see how much money the movie has gross. I hope and pray that the movie makes more than a Billion dollars, I want the Passion of Christ to gross higher then any movie in History. I have always known that Jesus suffer for our sins, But until this movie, I never knew how much. This movie has given me more Faith then ever before, The actor who played jesus was perfect. Not to mention that he was the same age jesus was when he died on the cross. I wish that could tell Mel Gibson How thankful I am that he thought of such a movie, How he let the people know how much our lord suffer for us. It has change my life completely. It's has made me understand the power of forgiveness. If you ever meet Mel Gibson, Please let him know that this movie has change the lives of so many people, and I know that our lord had to have given him this vision to make such a movie. I know that this movie wasn't easily to make, But thank god it's was made. I live in oxon hill Maryland, and me and my family have seen the movie at least four times. Much love to Mel and our lord for giving Mel the strength to completed this movie. This movie was god sent.

Posted by: Rachel Young at May 11, 2004 05:02 PM

I thank God for this movie, and also that he has used Mel to make this movie, because this was happened to Jesus at that time, Mel tried to make it as it is, this is the Love of God to all of us, REMEMBER, if there are any ways for salvation rather than Jesus has to die on the cross, I believe Jesus has been chosen the other way rather than He has to die on the cross but because I believe there are no other way for us to be saved accept Jesus has to die on the cross and suffer tremendous pain that we can show on this movie, than we know Jesus loves us so much. In Indonesia, most are moeslim, this movie are not allowed, so we have to wait for the DVD so we can watch with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Father - There are a lot of people who have written comments that have mocked You and the One whom You have sent. They "do not know what they do" because they don't know You, the Master of the Universe, our GOD and Creator. They are offended by the Blood that was shed for us because they don't know they are sinners and they need a Savior. Help them, Lord; help them to experience Your presence; help them to know Who You are -- and the relationship You desire to have with them. Thank You for the shed Blood of Jesus that convers a multitude of our sins -- of my sins. In Jesus' Name and for His sake, I pray. Amen. Signed: just another Sinner +

I expect a "major" movie to be presented in a language I unerstand... Mel, release an english version... 2 hours of gibberish is meaningless!
